LC will be changing the path names of all user home directories in both OCF and SCF HPSS archival storage systems (aka LC storage). The goal of this change is to make the HPSS home directory paths more uniform with other home directories in LC.

What is Changing?

User home directories in HPSS are currently in this form:

/users/u##/<username>/

We are removing the u## subdirectories. User home directory paths will change to this form:

/users/<username>/

When Will the Change Occur?

The change is planned for the following dates, both Wednesdays. (Note that the change in the SCF is a week after the change in the OCF.)

  • OCF: February 12, 2025 at 10am PST
  • SCF: February 19, 2025 at 10am PST

There will be a short HPSS outage at 10am on each of those days while we make the backend changes necessary put the new home directory paths into effect.

What Might Break?

Any absolute symlinks to files in your HPSS home directory will break because they point through a /users/u##… path that will no longer exist. Relative symlinks within your HPSS home directory should not be affected.

Any storage automation scripts that expect the specific layout of the HPSS user directories that includes the u## subdirectories will need an update.
