LC will be retiring all Jira instances (CZ, RZ, SCF) on February 13th, 2027. The costs to license and operate Jira have risen significantly, and the number of users utilizing the service has fallen over the past several years. Upon the retirement date, Jira instances will no longer be accessible to users.
Who is affected
This change affects all users, project owners, and integrations (e.g., Confluence) using LC Jira instances on the CZ, RZ, and SCF. This includes: lc.llnl.gov/jira (CZ and SCF), rzlc.llnl.gov/jira (RZ).
What is happening now
- Effective immediately, new project creation will be disabled.
- Existing projects will continue to function normally until the retirement date.
What you should do now
Teams should begin identifying the Jira projects they own, reviewing any dependencies on Jira integrations or APIs, and evaluating GitLab Plan and Track on LC's GitLab instances as an alternative to Jira. New long-term work should not be started in Jira.
Migration and data planning
LC is developing processes to support user-driven migration of Jira content to either LC GitLab or LLNL Jira. Detailed procedures, eligibility, timelines, and any limitations will be announced when available. Project owners should plan for the possibility that they may need to validate migrated data and preserve any required records before service retirement.
LLNL Jira at https://myjira.llnl.gov
This Jira instance is hosted by LLNL / LivIT. It requires that users have an AD password in order to authenticate and is only available on the yellow, unclassified network. Access permissions for LC-managed groups are not supported. LLNL Jira supports features and workflows similar to what is supported by LC Jira instances. Further questions can be directed to the Self Service Portal.
LC GitLab Plan and Track
LC GitLab instances (CZ, RZ, SCF) allow for identical access controls as was enabled in LC Jira. Issue and task types and hierarchy are customizable, though verbiage may be different to what was used with Jira. See the documentation on GitLab Plan and Track.
Additional milestones
Prior to the February 13th, 2027 retirement date, LC will announce any interim milestones, such as migration request deadlines, possible read-only periods, and post-retirement data access or retention timelines.
