Livermore Computing (LC) is pleased to announce the open-source release of Wormhole, a platform that enables HPC users to securely publish web applications and APIs running on LC systems. Deployed and operated by center administrators, Wormhole provides a managed path for users to make web services such as interactive visualization tools, containerized web applications, custom APIs, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers available through stable URLs.

Wormhole integrates with enterprise multi-factor authentication and can optionally provide token-based access for authorized automated clients, including artificial intelligence workflows. This allows users to retain a consistent service address when redeploying an application, subject to the platform’s configured routing and access-control policies.

Wormhole is currently in an early access phase within LC and current use cases support the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission and other selected early users.  By releasing Wormhole as open source software, LC hopes to accelerate development and improve the capabilities of the Genesis Mission infrastructure by inviting additional collaborators to contribute.  Wormhole will also generally function as part of LC’s long-term strategy to offer end users more capabilities to create composable, web-enabled workflows. Contributors may engage with the team directly on any of the GitHub repositories or by emailing wormhole-dev@llnl.gov.

The Wormhole team is focused on additional usability features, including a GUI for managing routes and tokens; CLI integration with existing authentication; Flux API integration; expanded documentation; and support for authenticating additional web application and API types. Following progress on these milestones, the team plans to transition Wormhole to broader availability across the LC user base.
